On November 26th I went to the Blind school which was located in Naklua. At first I wasn't sure whether I really wanted to go or not, but after the day I realised that it was surely worth the time. So most of the student guild and the Round Square steering committee took part in providing a party for the students in the Blind school. Since I was both, I volunteered to go and in the student guild, we decided to sponsor the Blind school Christmas party.
When I arrived at the school I was half excited and half worried because I personally wasn't capable of dealing with people who are a bit different from me. So the fact that actually being with the students in the blind school was intimidating for me. However, soon I found out that my intimidation was nothing compared to what the fear the students in the blind school go through everyday. The constant fear of not knowing what is happening around their peripherals and to try and not able to see the world as we perceive is what made the student's from our school hard to earn their trust.
By playing with the little children who live their everyday lives in the school was a new experience and a mind opening to the real world. I realised until this moment, that I had been a hypocrite because I have been supporting the aid for handicapped people whereas I realised I had a huge disparity of truly understanding those people. Also I had to acknowledge that the students were in their heart more brave than any one of us that came to help out with the party. It was thought provoking and a precious memory which I would never forget.
After sometime the kids got closer with us and I started to mingle within the group of students. Even though a little different, I was reminded that these students were also able to be happy and to see their smiles on the kids' faces. There were shouting, screaming, laughter and most of all caring for each other while we were playing games and singing to the music. It was a wonderful experience which I believe would allow me to gain a wider perspective of the world and work to create a better society even for those that are alienated like the students in the blind school.
